Why multimedia (does not) suck

Here's a couple different thoughts on the good and the bad of "multimedia"/web documentaries.

Homepage design - last call for feedback

I'm including the latest homepage revision from our dev team, that Jonathan mentioned in his email.

This is your last chance to voice any thoughts and feedback you might have; what you like and what you don't like about it. Our dev team needs to get started on coding it as soon as possible.

Please, include your feedback as comments for this post, so we can have them all in one place. Thanks.

home pages

Really like this page from Viktor
http://www.protest.eu/en#!/home
I just don't care for the darkening of the background when hovering over a particular clip.

I agree with Sarah, having a dominant photo with the other stories smaller below it would work well, like in the Vewd magazine she showed.

homepages.

As for websites go, one of my favorite websites to navigate has always been natgeo. http://photography.nationalgeographic.com/photography/?source=NavPhoHome.

I love the national geographic's website with the photo of the day and how it is portrayed with a main photo underneath various links.

Another website I like for a home page is this deaf photographer's website, Tate Tullier.
http://tatetullier.com/. I like the slideshow of photos that appear on the main screen along with the links on the side.

Sarah, I really like your idea of the larger photo on top and smaller below. Both of the websites you chose are neat!

I like how the following are set up...

http://www.magnumphotos.com/

My roommate is a new media design major. I asked her if she knew of any sites with nice looking layouts. She gave me this site to look through. I thought I would pass it along incase you guys are having a hard time finding layouts you like.

2 Examples of Homepages

The NY Times homepage has a layout that is pretty representative of what many larger online newspapers and magazines have. It has a central photo and links that surround the photo for other stories. It also has a column of all the different topics it focuses on to the left of the page.
http://www.nytimes.com/

National Geographic has a similar web format to NY Times but it focuses more on the imagery. It is also neater and does not wrap story links around the central image. It also sorts it links by type, such as photo, video, interactive, and features. The page itself does not have too many links on it allowing the viewer to scroll down for a long time.

2 Examples of Homepages

Hey guys,
Here are some nice, clean homepage designs. I like the idea of having a large photo at the top and small thumbnails for each essay underneath.

Responsive Web Design movement

Hey everybody,
I wanted to introduce a concept that has been sweeping through the web development community in 2011, and is becoming very popular. It's called responsive design.

What it means is that the website design becomes fluid (flexible) based on the device it is beeing viewed on. One of the key elements of this approach is that it really takes the "app" out of the equation for publishers, saving them money and increasing the speed at which they can publish.

I wanted to show some examples of what it is. First, a live example that some of you might have seen:
Boston Globe website - don't mind the actual colors or how it's layed out, resize the browser window to see how the content adopts to the smaller viewing area. If you can, check it out on your iPad or smartphone.

There are free frameworks that allow web developers create these responsive designs. One of my favorites, that I will be using for my own business projects, is Initializr. Here's a simple demo template of a responsive design. Do the same thing, resize browser window to see how it fluidly adopts to it.

What do you think? Any thoughts or comments?

Contact Update

Just wanted to update everyone on the contacts I made for the professional organizer and the Rochester City Ballet. The professional organizer has contacted her clients scheduled for the weeks within my deadline. Unfortunately none of them are willing to let me into their homes or to talk to me. I have been in contact with the Rochester City Ballet many times throughout break and they are still moving me along their chain of command to get permission to photograph. I am hoping to get a definite answer by our next class meeting.
